Hey Dan Lok here, if you don’t know me, we have generated over a hundred million dollars in coaching and core sales, and last couple years alone, here’s a question I get all the time. Should I give my best stuff away for free? Should I give my best content away for free? I wanna share a quick story with you. I was a teenager and one day I was jogging around my neighborhood. I was just jogging and I saw an older gentleman. He was kind of mowing lawns in front of his house. I noticed he seems to be struggling with the lawn mower a bit. It seems to be the machine is a bit too heavy for him. So I thought, Hey, I was a young guy. I walked up to him. I said, Hey, maybe I could help. So I said, sir, do you want me to, to help you?
And he said, oh, young man, that would be so good. Thank you so much. You’re so kind. I said, no problem. You know, I like working out. So I grabbed the lawnmower and I mowed the entire lawn. And by the time I was done, it pulled out a $20 bill. And it gave that to me. There was the first time I experienced what it’s like to, to make money using my skill, kind of in my own little business venture. So he gave me 20 bucks and I said said, no, no, it’s okay. I don’t need it said no, no, no, take it. Take it. I want you to have it. I said, okay, thank you so much. Right. $20 back then to me was quite a bit of money. So I took the $20 and I thought to myself, I wonder if there are other people in the neighborhood that would need this service that would need my help, but there’s only one problem.
I don’t have a lawnmower. I don’t have money. Right. I couldn’t afford a lawnmower. So I approached this older gentleman. I said, you know, sir, what if I could help you to mow your lawn? Cuz it seems like you’re having a tough time. Now I’m a young guy, I’m a teenager. And I thought, you know, could I borrow your lawnmower so that I could kind of do this for other people. I’ll come here every single week. I’ll mow your lawn. I’ll take care of the machine. I’ll make sure I sharpen the blade. He’s very kind. And he loan me his machine. As long as you know, you promise to take care of it, you know, you’ll add your own little gasoline to it. And no problem said, okay, I’ll do that. So now I have my lawn mower kind of like a nothing down kind of deal.
Right. I knock on people’s door and I say, Hey, my name is Daniel. I introduce myself at the time, there was my name before Dan Lok. And I said, Hey, you know, I could help you mow your lawn. That’s what I do. They all said, no, no, no, we don’t need it. We don’t need it. We don’t need it. And we don’t need, and I got a ton of rejections, right? Just say, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. And okay. You know, before I even start the business, I have failed. This is not going anywhere. So I was thinking about giving up. I was thinking about maybe this is not the thing to do. The only person I could help is that older gentleman. And before giving up, I thought to myself, Hmm, what did I do to earn that $20 in the first place?
I didn’t walk up to him expecting to get paid. I walked up to him thinking, Hey, maybe I could add some value. Just thinking about maybe I could just do some exercise, but he gave me 20 bucks. So I thought to myself, you know what, I’m gonna give this thing one more try. So I picked a house in our neighborhood with the biggest house, the nicest house, but the tallest grass. Right? And I found this perfect house. Now, by the way, I didn’t know I was a teenager. I was trespassing. I’m not an advocate of this, but the time I was too stupid to know the difference. I didn’t know you couldn’t do this. But anyway, that’s what I did. I mow the entire and I sat in front of the, the, the front, the stairs. And I saw a lady just drove by. She was just drove driving by like that.
And she looked and she actually drove right by. And then she kind of backed up and said, oh, she’s actually the owner of the house. But she couldn’t recognize her house. Cuz her grass was tall. Like kind of like to my thigh, this, this tall. And she was like, oh my goodness, young man, what did you do? Why are you sitting in front of my house? And I introduce myself. I say, Hey, I’m a young person. I’m a young guy. I just, I help people mow the lawns. And she was so grateful. She was like, oh my goodness. You know, my husband travels all the time. I don’t know how to use these damn machines. And I’m kind of embarrassed. You know? No one comes to mow lawn, thank you so much. And then she pulled up a hundred dollars. Now for me at the time it was a huge amount of money, a hundred dollars.
And she gave it to me. And from then on this lesson has stuck with me for the rest of my career. And the lesson is this and that is to add value before you ask anything in return. And that’s why I make content. That’s why I do podcast. That’s why I do interviews. That’s why I do speaking. It’s to add value before you ask anything in return. So the question is, should you give your best stuff away for free? The answer is absolutely because when you give your best stuff away for free, when you give your best content away for free, it builds trust. Here’s what people are thinking. Hey, you know what I wanna get from here to here. From A to B
And they love your content and you’re putting out your best stuff out there. Don’t come from a place of scarcity. Don’t think, Hey, if I give my best stuff away for free, they won’t buy from me. The opposite is true. Here’s what people are thinking. If your free stuff is this good, I wonder how good and how phenomenal your pay stuff would be. And that’s exactly how it works. If your free content and free stuff is this good and you are already getting them results. You’re adding value. Before you ask anything in return and you are adding value and scale through content. Hey, I want more access. I want more coaching. I want more skills. I want more knowledge. I want more from your company. They would buy. This is why it’s so critical to come from a place of abundance versus coming from a place of scarcity. So what is the answer? Should you give your best content and best stuff away for free? Comment below. Until then go high ticket.
